Espirit De Corpse

A Clear Case Of Dead Reckoning

A Moldovan who claimed his wife had died and borrowed cash to pay for her funeral was exposed when pals went to see how he was coping - and she opened the door. Vitalie Varinca, 38, raised 3,000 quid in a whipround from workmates at the factory where he was a foreman in the town of Hughnchesht. He told them his beautiful young wife had been tragically killed in a car accident while pregnant. But he was arrested and charged with obtaining money by deception.

ounds like we're both discussing fraud.

The "bank examiner" scam was notorious here several years before the net.

People would be called and asked to "help" the examiner weed out dishonest personnel. I don't remember the details but it worked because it's in people's nature to help. Very different than the folk who expect something for nothing.

G'day Granny,

Never heard of the bank examiner scam, but I reckon I for every ten people who deflect con artists, a couple of folks get taken for a ride.

Be safe, be wary.

Had to smile ... what on earth was he thinking.

It was good to come over and catch up on your blog. I've been busy with photographs but posted almost everything off yesterday. I have a little more time for my webwandering.

Nice work David, I really enjoyed reading down the page.

Hi Carol,

You're right - she's the one we have to feel concerned for.

Hi Dawn,

We can only hope that she was not part of the scam.

They're idiots. Why that "my spouse is dead, can I borrow money for her funeral?" scam is one of the oldest tricks in the book. At least it is in this trailer court...

Hi Goddess,

I guess he must have sounded really convincing, judging by the amount of money he collected!
