But You Don't Look A Day Over Sixty

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

This mailbox – in an unfamiliar suburb – stopped me in my tracks last Wednesday afternoon.

Why? Two reasons, I guess. First, it’s not every day you see a light-blue mailbox. Second, it’s obviously seen better days, judging by the rust, the wonky orientation and the damage to the top.

But in totality, I saw a certain beauty here. Simply because it was, well, different. I saw something to be admired in the context of the way it fitted its surroundings – the painted picket fence, the garden and the unswept leaves that formed a beautiful bronze carpet.

Totally agree, it's different and stands out from all the other uniformly pristine mailboxes you usually find in suburbia.

And, yes, I like it!

ours use to be in that condition when we would go look for it after the kids would pass and hit with a base ball bat... NOW it is a steel concrete one.. I sure wish I had seen them when they tried to hit it...oh yes they did try...wonder where they got their windshield fix after the bat returned to them and how they explained that to their folks.

I am glad I stopped by. I have been off-line so long that I forgot that I was going to start doing My World Tuesdays. I had a couple of ready topics while my computers were down, but I may have to go out looking for something. But it's still Monday here, so I have time.

BTW, we have a mailbox with a bullet hole in it. It was that way when we bought the house--the previous owners' divorce was less than friendly.

My number is forever 43. At least the house has that number. It isn't even official as it has another number for legal purposes. Nice post.

actually very cool...too many drab mailboxes out there, not to appreciate one that got a little TLC.

I wonder how long it's been there and how many paint jobs it's had?

I'd leave it be if it were mine. It's eye-catching.

Perhaps it was once nice, and once there was care, once there was a quirky person who lived there, however still, I am not sure! Nice post!

It certainly has seen better days judging by its crumpled state.
I am now wondering what colour mail boxes in Aus are?

Yes, it's an eye catcher. It is possible that at one time the mailbox said 19, fell off and was replaced upside down...

I love it. I am always on the lookout for something "different" to be photographed too.

Have a great week.

You always find wonderful different, and unusual shots, David, and they're always delightful! This one is no exception! The mail box speaks to me I guess because of its age, but the shot itself incorporates it all, the humor, the age, the tattered beauty, a glimpse of other times!

Have a great week!

You are right, as usual, the beauty in simple things...and it is old too, I just love things with a bit of age to them, well, I would, wouldn't I?

It's certainly unique, in a vintage sort of way!

One thing we rarely get in the UK is a mailbox. In fact I can't recall seeing one off hand. If we had them though, it would probably confuse our postman

Interesting markings.

It has a nice rustic look to it.

Lots of beauty in wonky things and you've certainly caught it here in this delightful photo.

Love your heading David. The letterbox is certainly one of a kind, I really like the artistic touch of shading the numerals.

Could I nominate Ecobirder, no.2 on the list, for post of the day?
His text is informative and goes so well with the quite beautiful illustrations.

Blue and yellow are opposite on the color wheel. It makes things pop.
