Denim Wrangle

Da Kneebone's Connected To Da Rip Bone

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Gotta hate it when your favourite jeans show a rip in the knee. The more faded they are, the more they've been lived in and, therefore, the more comfortable they are. Because I wear a suit during the week, I enjoy getting into Levi's on weekends and on Casual Fridays at work. Now the big question - in your opinion, is it cool to wear jeans that are ripped at the knee?

Shit man, you could sell those for a lot of money. Teenage girls love the hell out of them.

Sure, if you want to look really cool. Down at the store you'd have to put down a handfill of bills to get a prewashed, fake-used with holes like that. It's a treasure, actually.

Come to think of it, it's too authentic to wear, you'd risk being jean-napped.

Put it on e-Bay, to be safe! *chuckle*

Very cool to wear, but I think you'll need to retired them for mufty Fridays... we usually have the "jeans are ok, as long as they're neat and with no holes" rule

My son will only sport ripped jeans, and he believes himself to be the king of cool. You have now been elevated to super-trendy, my friend!

Thank you, David, I am looking forward to your camera post!
Sunny midsummer greetings from Vienna,
Merisi
P.S.:
Would you believe it, I was walking home from lunch when I spotted an opticians store window with those yellow rubber duckies, swimming in old zinc bath tubs. Shall put them on my blog as soon as I get a coffee break. :-)

Hi Merisi,

Was just about to log off when I saw this comment. Looking forward to your post (and pictures) of the rubber ducks!

Enjoy your summer. It's blowing a gale here, but because there's rain there won;t be frost tonight.

Cheers

everyone else already said 'yes trendy' what more can I add?

Mine always ripped, I used to buy some cheap lace or ribbon and sew it underneath the rip, or use an old shirt to add color and 'coolness'

I wouldn't quite reccommend the lace for a guy though, unless you're into that sort of thing ;)

Hi Victorya,

Like I said, ``trendy'' is not a word my kids would use to describe me.

Lace might not enhance my reputation (such as it is) but maybe I should increase the size of the rip for added ``cool factor''!

just thoght of it.. why not take a piece of denim cloth say a dark blue shade or white.. make a design on it.. and sew it along the rip... kinda looks good.. though makes you something of a funky guy!!

Reminds me of my late brother-in-law who quickly used my sister's sewing machine to mend the rip his son's jeans. His son, an ex-Paulite back home for the vacations, was really, really upset. "Papa, it took me such a long time to get it looking that way, and now I have to rip it out all over again!!" That was back in the late '80's, but I can see it's still trendy today.

Hi Rene,

That's a terrific perspective on denim fashion. Funny thing is, back in my university days, when all my friends only wore dark blue jeans, I was the only one that went for the light blue, faded look!

So now we know who started the stone-washed trend.

Hi Rene,

That's very flattering, but I have never been a fashion trend-setter.

Smart casual, yes. Fashion plate, er, no!
