The Luck Of The Iris

Looks Like A Purple Patch

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

A few hours ago I saw a clump of irises and as I examined them I realised this iris was so symmetrical that it was almost a mirror image of itself. The light was very strong, but I had to contend with irregular shade patterns across the flower. Like I always say, that's the joy of photographing objects that are outdoors. The real challenge lies in making the best use of the prevailing conditions.

You have prevailed in your efforts to show the beauty and symmetry of this iris, David. From your photo, one can easily see how this flower became stylized into the fleur de lis. Thank you for this photo.

Thanks, David, for visiting. Glad you liked the photo, too. About the fleur de lis, I had a social studies teacher in junior high school who was into them--he told me that fact at some point during the years of 1961-1963. Funny how facts pop up. And to make sure my memory had not failed me, I also used Google (funny that you've put that on your blog about Googling yourself right after I Googled) to find this at Wikipedia: Here's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleur-de-lis.

David, I really like the fact that there's this shade pattern and the strong light being filtered a bit, together they make for an unique image. The postcard stands are full with perfect pictures, and they can be beautiful, but I prefer the real life reflected in your photograph
(I know full well to appreciate a photographer's craft and artistry involved in a so-called perfect image, but I can get tired of those, a perfect rose is a perfect rose is a perfect rose, yet capturing imperfect life is never boring).

Great. I always think a little bit of shadow is preferable to full sun.

Hi David: I replied to this post because purple and olive is my favorite complimentary color combo. Thanks for visiting my blog and your pics are gorgeous. But that is not surprising since you are a professional.

And readers do often become writers don't they? I've been an avid reader since I was an adolescent. Don't read many novels anymore, mostly art/craft/gardening/renovation, etc., books.

Have a creative day,
Paper Lady
