I Aspire To A Spire

Armstrong Ain't The Only One With A Moon Shot

Photographs copyright: DAVID McMAHON

I took these pictures a few hours ago, showing the half-moon nestling up to the spire of the Victorian Arts Centre here in Melbourne. I sometimes get asked (by newcomers to photography) what makes a good shot. My answer never changes - if you look twice at something, get out your camera. In this instance, I literally stopped in my tracks because of the colours of the scene in front of me.

Ten minutes later or even ten minutes earlier and the sky would not have been such a striking contrast to the streetscape. The second shot (below) was taken with the 125mm lens unfurled. It would have been a sharper image if I'd used a tripod, but at least it gives you a nice composition with the moon alongside the myriad lights of the spire. Even the overhead wire kind of adds to the mystique.

Cool pics. I am hoping to get more into the working of the camera we bought this summer (Cannon Rebel XTI). It'll be nice to figure out how to set the shutter speed and aperture to make it all come together.

Lovely shots. I agree about the blue and red tones in the first shot, creating great drama!

Nice shot with the colors. My attention was actually drawn immediately to the top of the spire.

I love the close up. Me, though, I know I would have 'shopped that wire out...

Splendid photos, interesting and informative text that spells out the best advice I've heard about getting the good shots. It's just plain fun, isn't it?

Hi Dan,

Lovely to hear from you. That's exactly what happened to me when I saw the scene.

My eyes went straight up - and then down to the rich colours.

Hi Les,

Thank you. Glad you liked the picture.

I do have a lot of fun phtographing scenes with `annoying' impediments like the wire!

Hi Colleen,

Thank you very much. Would have been nice if I had some trees in silhouette as well.
