Austrian tennis player Hans Redl played at Wimbledon between 1947 and 1956 despite losing an arm during World War II. He served by tossing the ball up with his racquet.
Amazing spirit - there was a soccer goalkeeper, Bert Trautmann I think was his name, who played an FA Cup game (might even have been a final) with a broken neck.

Did you know of Pete Gray, the one-armed baseball player in the 1940s? (Most good players were fighting in WW2.)
