You Be The Judge

Preside Over Aussiejourno's Weekly Blog Awards

Would you like to be the guest judge of this week's Blog Awards? If your blog has been in the top 25 on any week since the Awards started, you are welcome to judge them this week. Just leave a comment here (with the url of your own blog) and I'll get back to you.
If I get enough expressions of interest, we could even set up a roster where one blogger judges the Awards this week, someone else judges them next week and so on.
After all, the Award are all about involvement ....

Hi David, thank you for offering the opportunity to be a guest judge. I wish I had the time. I don't know how you do it, reading all those blogs!

Hi Stacy,
It's simple - I just pretend each day has 30 hours instead of 24!
It's great to see 29 votes against your name, too. Hope you win.
Keep smiling
David

I'm not sure I am qualify to judge other people's blog.

What exactly does it involve? Do I pick my own blogs, does it have to be done in a week? Maybe you can explain how you pick your choices or the process you go through to pick the blogs.

I probably would like to do once in a while when I am not too busy. Who knows maybe it would be fun.

lissa

P.S. If I haven't thank you enough, here it is again - thank you!

Hi Lissa,
Believe me, you qualify! Not just on the basis of your work but on the basis of the fact that you and Deb (toiletpaper56) have dominated the top of the list.
Let me know when you're not too busy and it would be great to have you judging them.
In answer to your questions:
a) no, you don't pick your own blog. You list 49 of the 50 best blogs and I just decide where your blog fits in, to complete the 50.
b) yes, it needs to be done in the course of the calendar week.
c) the method I use might not fit in with the way you or someone else judges the blogs. I would encourage everyone to use their own method, which in turn will introduce a fresh eye to the contest.
Look forward to hearing from you when you have some spare time, Lissa.
Keep smiling and keep up the great work.

David,

I have been swamped lately, but am happy to still be on your weekly list. I see that a lot of new cool blogs have been on the list as well. This is a good idea. I just am not sure if I have the moral authority to be a judge of blogs just yet. :)

I am just imagining it and it makes me appreciate and feel awe at how you manage to do it. :)

I guess I'd qualify as a judge if I just work on it.

Anyway, thanks for all the help. This is taking it to another level.

Keep it up David. I'd be happy to be a part of this great idea.

G'day ipodwheels,
Any time you're ready to do it, just holler.
As to whether you have the moral authority - you've been in the Top Ten basically from the first week, so that certainly gives you the editorial authority!
You just say when you want in, buddy!
Keep up the good work. Love your blog.

Thanks for the invite Dave,
Unfortunately I am 2 weeks from moving house and 8 weeks from moving country, otherwise if I had the time I would be delighted to have a lash at it.
Cheers mur

Jeepers-creepers, Mur,

Moving away entirely? Was it something I said, mate?!!!

Good luck with the move in to weeks - and are you re-locating permanently overseas?

Next up, while I'm asking all the questions, you will keep blogging, won't you?

Gotta keep the Vegemite brotherhood going!

Good luck with everything

I'm far too spineless put myself in that position!! Some of these guys in here, feel kin to me now, and the thought of placing one above the other knocks me cold..

I simply lack the objectivity (sorry).

But thank you!!

david mcmahon said...

Ah yes, Shrink,

You, my well-bred, erudite English friend, have hit the nail on the head. Bang. One shot. Bullseye.

It's suddenly crystal-clear to me now.

You know how I always say it's great to see all of you on each others' sites, supporting one another and offering encouragement? Well, that's precisely it. Were any of you to judge the Awards, it would be like hving to rank your siblings in order of preference.

Yes. Thank you for your comment. I see now why the concept - wonderfully democratic though it may be - has a major flaw.

Thanks, Shrink. You put it right into context.

Bless ya

David

B.T.Bear (esq.) said...

cool! Thanks for the invitation, Dave! But like Shrinks says, I would lack the objectivity.... I thought I could rank them on how they look visually, layout and clarity an stuff...but now that I've thought about it, I'm not so sure. I mean, if there are Bears on the site, it would be very tempting to put them up higher than say, any site that featured beak-nosed tree hugging koalas.

I'd still be willing to do it, if you wanted to go ahead, but I'd be worried about hard feelings. I think I like it just friendly.

So how about give lots of different people on the list just 5 blogs to look at, and ask them to put them in order based on preference, layout, ease of navigation, etc.

Then YOU put all the first place blogs in the top 5, all the second place blogs in the next 5, etc. It would cut down the workload for each person and so maybe get more volunteers. And if you say on the post "and our guest judges were...." no one knows who put them where.
Just an idea...

You know what they say, David, about fools rushing in where angels fear to tread. I also feel that I am not qualified, but I have a rule in my life that has served me well. If I am asked to do something that involves, or would require growth and stretching, and I feel fear, I give up the right to say no.

So, yes I will do it. You had to ask.

David,

I would be honored to be a judge! I just hope I can live up to every one's expectations. But if the Master feels that the apprentice is qualified, he will bestow responsibility upon him.

Hi BTBear,

No worries at all. I hear the strong theme of togetherness in your comment.

No hassle, believe me. I would not ask anyone to judge their peers if you're not 100 per cent comfortable about it.

I love your thought process and the considerate way you express it.

Keep smiling.

David

david mcmahon said...

Hi Joel,

Nice quote (Hemingway) about rushing in where angels fear to tread.

But if you're game to do it, that's great. First come, first served.

Just let me know if you'd like to judge this week's awards (week ending 21 April) or next week's. Choice is yours.

Thank you, on behalf of everyone

David

david mcmahon said...

Hi Copper,

Wonderful. Glad to hear it. Er, I'm not the master, though. I'm just a blogger, like everyone else.

That's a yes from you and Joel.

Many thanks.

David

Deb said...

David, I would love to be a judge, the only problem is, I have made some blogging buddies (favorite sites) and that wouldn't be fair in my judging of others. I'm proud of my site, however, I wonder if I'm actually qualified to judge somebody else. I know what I look for in another blog, know what keeps me coming back, know what I don't like, but all of this is MY personal opinion.

David, it's a fine idea, but some of the others have a point. Please, what do you think? I know we leave it on your shoulders every week to judge, maybe that's a huge burden. I do have the time to do this...hummm...indecision.

Deb

Deb said...

Hi David...just thinking more about this...I think this would be more than I could handle with a full-time job and 2 blogs on the go. Thanks for the invite though, and thanks once more for even having these wonderful awards weekly. Have you perhaps thought of having them bi-weekly?

Deb

david mcmahon said...

Hi Deb,

I'm more than happy to keep judging it. The reason I threw the invitations open was to introduce another person's viewpoint over the contest.

I know that you're undecided and I respect that; and I would never push you to judge the work of other bloggers and friends.

Play it by ear. See how you feel. No pressure.

I'd never put pressure on anyone to be a guest judge.

Let's just see how it goes ....

Take care

David

david mcmahon said...

Hi Deb,

Just saw your second message. Relax, that's not a problem.

You have another blog? And you didn't tell me that because ...????

What's the url?

Keep smiling .....

Marianne said...

HI David,

Wow, thanks for the invite! Time is a factor, I don't always have control over, the other is a personal quirk. :-D There are myriad wonderful blogs out there in the blogisphere, but I'm a bit of a gypsy when it comes to sticking with too many of them. Am I fickle? However, there are a couple that I do regularly visit. One is yours, and the other is www.nakedauthors.com blog. Nakedauthors is a group of my favourite crime authors who each do one post a week. They are varied personalities, but the posts can range from 'what I'm doing at the moment' to 'deep and meaningful' - and some are a great lot of fun, and some make you cry. I've been visiting it daily for nearly two years now, and they miss me when I'm away. :-) I might pick up on other blogs, and visit a few times. But if I don't get much of a feedback - ie, answer to comments - I usually delete the URL from my Favourites list and go dig for something else.

So, what I'm trying to say is that I don't think I'm too qualified to do this. And I'm not always around. Can I take a raincheck until I maybe feel more confident?

Your blog is the Tops! Maybe I should investigate a few more on your list. :-)

Cheers
Marianne

Actually, David, what I meant was, do I choose the blogs that goes on the list - I was not talking about my blog at all. I know some blogs that I like to see on the list. I agree with Deb -- maybe bi-weekly - aren't you tire of doing it weekly?

lissa.

Finn Haverkamp said...

Hey David,
I thin it would certainly be interesting to judge another persons blog. Also most likely fun. I'm not sure what the particulars are, but I don't think I have time this week regardless. Some other week? School work, you know how it is. Thanks for the invite.

phaseoutgirl said...

Hi David,

It is indeed an honour to be asked to judge, but I think Shrink has hit it right on the head, we feel like family now: Aussiejourno's proteges. :-)

If I may suggest, you might want to ask others whom you know personally and trust, but are not on this list for one reason or the other, or maybe those who are not bloggers at all but appreciate good blogs, to be a judge. Perhaps even share the judging with you.
That would be interesting, to see their perspective!

cheers,
Cecilia

hey David,

Thanks for the comment. I would love to be a judge of a weekly blog awards. I guess I would have to ask from suggestions from you though on how to go about it. Do you have criteria already or do we come up with what we personally think will count as essential?

Given that it is a weekly stint, do I base judgment only on the week's entry?

I'm excited to be a judge soon. I'd have to hear from you though on how I can best do it.

Thanks for this chance to be of encouragement to other bloggers too. You never fail to come up with really helpful ideas to keep us passionate on keeping our blogs.

:) actually mine has been quite abandoned these past few days. I am happy to get back to it though and to see your encouragement.

Thanks David. I look up to you.

Hi Marianne,

No worries at all. I hear you loud and clear, on all those issues.

Thanks for the kind words about my blog - but now I'll be checking out the crime authors' blog you've told me about. Sounds fascinating, for sure.

Interesting to see waht you said about getting feedback to comments. In this respect, investigate some of the blogs on my weekly list - and you'll see an uncommon spirit of camaraderie where they always reply to comments. It's great to see.

Yes, of course you can take a raincheck - and thank you so much for taking the trouble to reply.

Keep smiling

David

david mcmahon said...

Hi Lissa,

You can choose any blogs you want. It's your choice.

No, I'm not tired because I post the list every week. I just reckon it's great fun - and the feedback is very interesting.

Keep smiling and keep updating that wonderful blog of yours.

Cheers

Hi Finn,

Yep, I know what it feels like. Just keep your priorities right and I think you're doing a wonderful job with everything.

Yes, you can judge them any time you want. Just let me know ....

Take care and good luck with your great blog.

David

david mcmahon said...

Hi Cecilia,

Yes, I can see exactly why you and so many others have agreed with Shrink. No worries at all.

Yes, I have asked one other person as well, who is not on the list, but he's a person for whom I have a great deal of professional respect. He runs a great website, by the way. You can probably guess who he is (clue: he's based in Europe) but all will be revealed shortly.

I won't tell you who it is yet, because he's busy at the moment but has indicated he would like to judge the awards, down the track.

By the way, I'm sure everyone would agree it's a very good thing that so many people feel like ``family''.

I think that's a great feeling.

Say hi to the girls for me.

Hi HB,

Yes, it sure is. All the bloggers on Aussiejourno's Weekly Blog Awards are e-ninjas. They can do triple somersaults, carry out their own stunts on film, paint like Leonardo!

There are not many things that are better than the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but my blogger friends certainly are!

Take care

David

Hi Sue,

G'day Chris (ipodwheels)

That's great. That's a yes from Joel (Prof Bush), Copper Stiletto and you and I have one other judge lined up too.

In answer to your questions ...

I have my own judging criteria, but I leave it up to you entirely. A fresh eye brings fresh perspective.

Yes, I reckon the week's entries are the best way to go, rather than the whole blog. After all, we judge on the week's output.

I'm always happy to encourage people and I enjoy visiting your site. Relax - everyone's traffic dipped badly during the Easter break.

More later

Well thank you matey. I'm just thinking about the time difference. Remember the international date line. Would I get a full week to look these great blogs over? If yes, then I would be honored to explore the blogs and see what I can find, no matter how hard it might be to say "no".

david mcmahon said...

Hi Catmoves,

Yep. You would indeed get a full week - even if the international date line were to be abolished overnight!

Shall I take that as a yes?

Cheers

Hi David,

I don't read many blogs. If an entry is more than 15 lines long I tend to move on. I mostly look at pictures. I don't have the extra time to take away from my painting. I'll have to decline.

Sincerely,
chewy

I just got back into town so I'm not sure I'd be up for it this week. But how about next week? It might be fun to look at everyone's and figure where they fall. I'd just need a little info on what it entails, when I'd have to have it to you by, etc. Thanks for the opportunity though! THat's awesome!
