Trivia Pur$uit

And now, just for something a little bit different! Instead of giving you snippets of trivia as I normally do, I want to make this segment a bit more interactive. So, this time I’m going to ask you a question instead. Here goes, folks. Who was the first German-born player to win the Wimbledon men’s singles title? Leave your answers in the comments section and I’ll give extra points for witty responses.

Dear Carol and Neil,

Very close, but not quite!

I actually covered Wimbledon from 1981-87 and watched Becker beat Kevin Curren in the 1985 final and Ivan Lendl in the 1986 final.

Becker was the youngest champion (even younger than the player who won the boys' title that year!); as well as the first unseeded player to win the men's title; and also the first German man to win.

But he wasn't the first German-born champion.

All will be revealed shortly ....

You might find it difficult to believe but, coincidentally, I've actually visited his birthplace several times on 'field exercises'.

I won't spoil it for the others.

El Tel,

Like Kilroy (of ``Kilroy was here'' fame) you have been everywhere. I figured you would know the answer.

Nice piece of trivia from your service career. Thanks for sharing it with us.
