The Fin Edge Of The Wedge
Want to see a great news photograph that looks like it could be a scene straight out of `Jaws”? Just go to News.com.au and you’ll see a memorable picture by Walkley Award-winning Herald Sun photographer Craig Borrow, a colleague of mine. The shot shows a menacing black shark fin in the middle of swimmers taking part in the Channel Challenge Swim from San Remo to Phillip Island, here in Victoria. But it wasn’t really a shark, just a competitor wearing a fake fin strapped to his shoulders. The prankster, Geoff Daff, reports Dina Rosendorff, has competed in all 22 channel swims. In the reporter’s own words, Daff ``said he had worn the fin twice before and other swimmers were used to his shenanigans.’’ Just to put the episode in perspective, it is less than a fortnight since an Australian abalone diver fought his way to safety after being swallowed head-first by a great white shark. His only injuries in the miraculous escape were a broken nose and bite marks around the chest.
