Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHONWhy did I take this shot? I'll explain in a minute - but mainly this caught my eye because of the many different shapes. Straight lines? Check. Arcs? Check. Semi-circles? Check. Angles? Check. Scrolls? Check. A triangle? Check. I guess it's not often you get all that - and a monochrome to boot - in one frame.
A few days ago, I was just shooting some random scenes across the Sandridge Bridge. I was on the bridge for less than five minutes, but in that time, in a typically Melbourne way, the light kept changing whimsically. There was scattered cloud, so the conditions kept alternating between dull and bright, without any apparent warning.
As the clouds scudded across the horizon, the sun shone brightly as I stood admiring this bollard on the bridge. I’m not an architect, so I have no idea if this structure serves a decorative purpose or if it has a particular function. What I can tell you is that when the light was at its strongest, I was quickly compelled to pick up my camera and shoot the strong shapes.

Yup.. I'm convinced that I don't "see" enough, even when I have my camera at hand. I'm so impressed with your ability to find that sort of beauty all around you.

Isn't it funny, I usually search for diffused light, rainy/cloudy days. But you've just proven that sharp light is beautiful too!

Even though I did not love highschool geometry so much, and this brought back a bad memory or two!
You may not be an architect, but you sure catch some great photos and the lines are very cool in a lot of your photos!!

"Louis" is buried deeper than his cowbell in a work project for the next several weeks. He will stop and visit, but may not stay long enough to 'sign the guest registry'.
i *am* an architect(*) and i can tell you that it *does* have a purpose. they are little tiny speedbumps for the critters who may run across it too quickly.

That is stunning David. We miss so much of the beauty around us don't we? I mean, somebody designed hat to look pleasing as well as being practical. Lovely.

Actually Holly is correct, there is an actual reason for those bumps but it has nada to do with critters ... oh no ... it has to do with water ... just .. they work like little dams and redirect the water so it doesnt pool up and cause the bridge to topple over ... yup, that's the reason...
