Say It With Flowers

A Mix Of Styles Says So Much About Life Itself

Photographs copyright: DAVID McMAHON

It’s always interesting to see how professional florists put together an arrangement. This beautiful bouquet, placed in a square display for a table, has an interesting variety of colours and textures that complement each other.

The square box is light pastel pink, which is perfectly echoed by the silken wax paper that encases it, separating it from the actual blooms. At the bottom of he box and concealed from sight, is a small bowl holding water and some magical long-life mixture.

The roses were photographed on the third day and they have slowly emerged from bud form into tightly furled blooms, with their colour a great match for the rest of the pink hues below.

The mix of white-based blossoms at the base of the decoration are an interesting mix of shapes and sizes, including what appear to be azaleas or something related to the rhododendron family, with dark transverse stripes across their light, curved petals.

There is a combination of leaves as well, in terms of shape and reflectivity. The larger leaves are from the rose stems, while the tapering, darker leaves are from a camellia.

It’s an interesting metaphor for life, don’t you think? Not every aspect must be strictly complementary - and sometimes unexpected variety can actually create a harmonious overall effect.

Flowers are like little slices of heaven. I love any arrangement, even ones that are not "beautiful".

I thought you were going to say you bought these beautiful flowers for your wife. Lovely mixture and ribbons. And yes, like life, variety can be harmonious.

Beautiful bouquet,
your words are an equally beautiful complement!

I love Keffir lime leaves, they are so bright and shiny, of a bright green.

Was there not a perfume also that caught your attention, David? Very sad if there wasn't! Hope those roses were delicious!

On looking at the white ones with stripes, if they were what I first thought they might have been, they would have had a very strong perfume! So strong in fact that, at my house, they would have to remain outdoors....(the ones with the dark stamens)...the others (white ones with stripes) may have been what I call dizzy lizzies!!

And on the "variety is the spice of life" theme...I always love the quote from the Bible, what is it, that says we all the body of Christ...meaning we all have different talents etc, which when all put together and used for good, complement our community and society?

(Sorry, I couldn't get my words to flow perfectly here).

Beautiful flowers and beautiful description.

The white ones are called alstromeria, also called Peruvian lilies. They are my favorite flowers. They come in a myriad of colors, all of which look great with my favorite turquoise vase!

Absolutely - 'perfect' seldom cuts it when it comes to natural beauty. I think homo sapiens is programmed to function best on a little irregularity in design or form. We always look for that edge.

I'm told the Native Americans who make those beautiful beaded items always make sure to put a few beads in the 'wrong' place.

That's a gorgeous bouquet!

Although I always enjoy your photos -of everything, but especially the ones of flowers, anytime you post pics of roses always gets to me big time. Love, love, love roses and these are just so gorgeous. Just want to reach out and touch the petals, smell the sweetness of their scents. Thanks, David! Great job.
