The term ``maverick'' is thought to have been derived from the name of Texas rancher Sam Maverick, who refused to brand his calves. It was given a new lease of life with the release of the film `Top Gun'. Yes, we all remember if was the call sign of the character played by Tom Cruise - but do you recall the name of the character he played? Just for the record, it was Pete Mitchell.

And Iceman was Tom Kazanski, or least that's what it sounded like. With a name like that it could have been spelled really weird.
But what was Goose's name?
Also, don't forget the Maverick TV show with James Garner and the movie with Mel Gibson. Before Gibson went all screwy on us. Not unlike Tom Cruise...and we're back to Top Gun.

As bart mentioned, the Mel Gibson movie Maverick was a fairly entertaining flick with some decent, if unrealistic, poker scenes.
Nick Bradshaw was Goose's name played by Anthony Edwards who I think is seen quite actively on ER. Nice snap David, very symmetric...Siddharth
I was just reading about Top Gun and came across a quiz which had a question, "Did anyone actually die during shooting of the film". Turns out that Art Scholl, a renowned American aerobatic pilot and aerial cameraman died during filming of Top Gun when his Pitts S-2 camera plane never recovered from an inverted flat spin and plunged into the Pacific Ocean. Scholl's last words were "I have a problem -- I have a real problem." The plane and the body were never recovered and no one knows the cause of the crash... Siddharth
Hi Siddharth,
I didn't know that. Anthony Edwards was actually in Melbourne last week for the Grand Prix.

Hi Bart,
Yes, and Iceman was of course played by Val Kilmer.
Siddharth has give us the info on Goose.
And guess what - I'd forgotten about the TV show. I must be slipping!
Cheers

Hi FJ,
I never actually saw the movie Maverick. Must get it on DVD. Now you and Bart and Siddharth have really set me off!
David
Great info, Siddharth,
And as we all know, the cinematography in Top Gun was stunning. I wonder how much of it was shot by the late Art Scholl.
Cheers and thanks for all that info

Nice pick up on Goose's name. That's always a good movie trivia question, since it's not ever mentioned in the movie, and if I remember correctly, can only briefly be visible twice (on the side of their F-14, and on his name patch after he dies and Maverick is going through his stuff. Perhaps his dog tags, too, but you have to really be looking there, probably).
Another good one is Jester. Not sure if his first name is ever mentioned, but he's definitely Cmdr. Heatherly (or something close to that. Viper says his name while giving Maverick the business for breaking the rules of engagement).
Hi Bart,
Keen eye for detail. I seem to recollect the name painted along the side of the fuselage.
Jester - what a good call. Now you've got me wondering. I'll have to run the DVD and see what I can come up with.
Did you ever hear the trade whisper that some of the cuts from `Top Gun' were used in the opening season on `Jag' as well?
Cheers
David
As someone who watched Top Gun every day for like a year straight in 1987 after I got the video, and have always had a clap trap memory for things like that (for instance, at age 14 I could tell you that not only did Star Trek II use plenty of shots from Star Trek: TMP, but Star Trek: TNG stole a couple shots from Star Trek III, just replaced the ship), I can tell you that it wasn't speculation, they totally did.
G'day Bart,
Many thanks for that information. I didn't know about the `Star Trek' scenes.
Thanks for confirming the link between `Top Gun' and `Jag', though.
Yeah, I sort of read between the lines and figured you'd watched the movie closely!
Cheers
David
