This shot was taken about ten minutes ago. The vagaries of Melbourne's unpredictable weather mean that you never know what sort of sunset you're going to get. It was a grey autumn day today (yes, it is autumn here) with drizzle patches and very little breeze. But look at the sunset we were treated to, with more colours than an Impressionist's palate.

David, that is beautiful. It is also a good reminder of why need to keep the camera close! We vacation in northern Minnesota where we sit on a dock and watch incredible sunsets across the lake. If you don't have a camera with you and have to run up to the cabin to get it, by the time you get back to the dock, it's a different sky.
Red skies at night, sailor's delight.
Red skies at morn, sailors take warn.
Hi Stacy,
I'm glad you liked the picture. Yes, I know what you mean about the light changing rapidly.
I actually shot a timed sequence during a sunset some months ago. Must post it here to show how quickly the colours changed.
Take care
David
Hi Bart,
The old rhyme that we heard as kids still is so true.
I was wondering why I hadn't heard from you for a few days.
Keep smiling
David
That's an amazing picture - I'm terrified of flying but if I could go anywhere, I'd love to visit Australia. That picture gives me motivation to work on my fear! :)

Hi Gina,
Nice to hear from you. I think you do great work with your blog. Thanks for giving me your url.
The funny thing is: I was actually about two minutes late for the most vivid colours. By the time I saw the sunset, the reds had disappeared.
Still, the upside is that the shades of violet and purple that are so typical of an Aussie sunset were at their strongest when I got there.
Cheers
David
Absolutely gorgeous... one of those snaps which everyone would wish they had taken not only because the snap looks so nice but also because they would actually be in a place where the sunsets are so beautiful.. Siddharth
Lovely picture! -Sandip Madan
Hi Siddharth,
Thank you for that comment. I was just lucky I happened to notice the vivid colours in time to shoot the sunset!
Take care
David
Hi Sandip,
Many thanks. Glad you liked the shot. Say hi to Anita and the girls.

Hi David,
As an Aussie expat - married a yank and now live over here - I miss Aussie skies of all colours. :-D This one's spectacular. I'ts been cold and snowy here lately - and I do mean arctic - so I'm wistful for the stretches of bush around Wangaratta where my parents live at the moment.
Wonderful photo! Wonderful sky!
Cheers
Marianne
Hi Marianne,
What a small world. Wangaratta! I'll have to drive there and post some pictures on the blog, just for you.
As you say, the colours are spectacular. So vivid.
Glad you liked the photo. I'll have to post some more, especially for you. Watch this space - seriously.
Cheers
David
