Contest Ends In A Tie

Going Neck-And-Neck In New Mexico

The bolo tie is now New Mexico's official tie. It's ``our bipartisan fashion statement," said Governor Bill Richardson, who wore large, Indian-made bolo inset with turquoise and other stones as he signed the legislation. In New Mexico, bolos are worn with everything from jeans to tuxes, according to ABCNews.com. But until now, there was one place you wouldn't find it: in state statutes. The Legislature this year voted to add the bolo to a long list of official symbols in state law, including the state cookie, the bizcochito; the state bird, the roadrunner; and the state question, "Red or Green?," an inquiry about chili preference. The Bill's sponsor, Republican Senator Steve Komadina of Corrales, is a longtime bolo wearer who has a collection of the neckwear including one in the shape of a llama, because he raises the animals.
