Verse And Worse

Random Wit, Errant Rhyme. Not A Literary Crime

Up the dry red billabong
In the Bungle Bungle
You hear the joyous birdsong
So distant from the jungle

Is this about the changing of the seasons? That's been on my mind so much lately. Spring is just coming here and I feel like writing a poem about it, but fall is just coming there. It's cool to think about that in a way.

What the heck is a billabong?

Wait, wait, don't tell me ...

BILLABONG, n:

1. A hookah for hire.
2. A clothing manufacturer for whom you can advertise, if you pay them enough.
3. An oasis in the Australian country or outback.
4. A dancing ground for swagmen, Matilda.

Aye, Sniz,

Winter is a-comin' in. But we're still in a severe drought here.

Rhea, the word ``billabong'' is an Aboriginal word for a creek, rivulet river bed or water hole.

G'day Amoeba,

I thought Quilly and Maggie May are hilarious with their comments, but you're the front-runner today!!

See my reply (above) to Rhea.

And say G'day to Matilda er, sorry, Quilly, for me!

I would love to sit by a billabong
And listen to the loud bird song.....
My wretched birds have flown away
I put their food out everyday
I don't suppose they're coming back.....
They fancy some one else's snack!

I hear the joyous bird song,
As I try to sleep.
If I had a shot gun,
They wouldn't make a peep!

Shortly after Amoeba and I moved into this lovely condo, he woke me in the middle of the night with a "Do you hear that?" No, it wasn't a monster my man needed saving from, it was a nasty blood-curdling scream and believe me I couldn't help but hear it! Soon there was a chorus of them!

The next morning when the sun came up and we had a look outside we immediately identified the screamer s -- peacocks. Pretty to look at but not so pretty to hear.

Billabong. A word that sounds like it's straight out of Jabberwocky. But isn't.

Joyous birdsongs. Joyous errant rhyme. Can't get enough of 'em.
