Mint Condition? I Don’t Think So

What Happened To `In God We Trust’?

An unknown number of new George Washington dollar coins were mistakenly struck without their edge inscriptions, including ``In God We Trust'', and made it past inspectors and into circulation, the US Mint said. According to WashingtonTimes.com, the Mint struck about 300 million of the coins, of which at least 50,000 are thought to be in circulation without the motto. The properly struck dollar coins, bearing the likeness of George Washington, are inscribed along the edge with "In God We Trust," "E Pluribus Unum" and the year and mint mark. They went into circulation on February 15. The Washington dollars are the first in a series of presidential coins slated to run until 2016. After Washington, the presidents to be honoured on dollar coins this year will be John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

FOOTNOTE: E Pluribus in, um, error.

I guess they remembered that they aren't allowed to pray in schools, so they left it off the coins???

Hi Tammy,

That is certainly one of the theories that is being discussed, even in the mainstream media. However, there were two batches of coins struck in two different cities - and it was only one batch that had the error.
