Are These Jack’s Sprats?

Can-Do Attitude In Latvia

A giant monument to canned fish has been opened in Liepaja, Latvia, to celebrate its status as the world's largest sprats producer. The sculpture shows a huge silver-coloured can with the message: "Sprats. Made in 1892 - Expiry date unlimited." Organisers wanted to trump the world's first monument to sprats, in Russia.

I'm reminded of an eccentric monument that was erected in the small city of Enterprise, Alabama. It's a monument to the boll weevil, which destroyed many cotton crops. The city felt the boll weevil ushered them into the industrial age.
